Tips on How to Wear Bold Colors

They say, “fortune favors the bold,” and we can’t help but think that the same sentiment applies to fashion. Introducing bold colors into your ensemble is an exciting way to create dramatic looks that will turn a few heads. That being said, pairing bold colors together poses more of a challenge than mixing neutral pieces. Doing so without looking like the inside of a Crayola box—unless that’s your vibe—requires a bit of thought. If your wardrobe has become a sea of neutrals and you want to enter into the world of bright and daring fashion choices, these tips on how to wear bold colors can help.

Reference the color wheel

When putting together outfits that feature bold colors, referencing the color wheel can be extremely helpful. You likely remember learning about the color wheel at some point during art class. Well, that previous knowledge wouldn’t just help you create beautiful paintings; your teachings can also help you put together incredible outfits.

Opting for bold colors on the opposite ends of the color wheel (known as complementary colors) will create a strong, dramatic contrast. If you would prefer a look that’s a little less striking, you could also compose an outfit that includes colors that are next to each other on the color wheel (known as analogous colors) such as yellow and orange or green and blue.

Go monochrome

If you don’t know which bold colors to pair together, consider going for a monochromatic look. A monochromatic outfit takes the struggle out of trying to figure out which bold colors will look chic when paired together.

To pull off a bold monochromatic outfit, choose pieces that all belong to the same color family. For example, you could opt for a bright blue blazer and a cobalt dress or a maroon skirt with a red fitted top.

Tone bold colors down with denim or neutral pieces

A great tip on how to wear bold colors for those who still want to keep their look a little more subdued is to incorporate denim or neutral articles into the outfit.

Neutral blazers or jean jackets look good with pretty much any color and can help offset a dramatic shade. Such pieces are great options for toning down your vibrant look until you feel more confident experimenting with vibrant-colored clothing.
